THE BASILICA OF ST. PATRICK'S OLD CATHEDRAL CELEBRATES THE PASSION OF CHRIST ON THE STREETS OF MANHATTAN

The Basilica of St. Patrick's Old Cathedral is the original Cathedral of the Archdiocese of New York. Located at the corner of Mott and Prince streets, the Basilica has been a beam for the Catholic community and an ancient symbol of religious freedom. For two centuries, St. Patrick's Old Cathedral has been unifying Catholics through worship, spiritual guidance, social activities, and the promotion of diversity and inclusion.
St. Patrick's Old Cathedral worked in conjunction with Regnum Christi to celebrate Good Friday by organizing a procession representing the 14 Stations of the Cross. Regnum Christi or “Kingdom of Christ” is a secular movement within the Catholic Church. The objective of the movement is to foster in its members the spirit of initiative, service, faith, and deep love for the Church. The Stations of the Cross also known as Via Crucis, Way of the Cross, Way of Sorrows, or Via Dolorosa depict the sacrifices and suffering of Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion and his death at Mount Calvary.
The Holy week formally known as Easter or Phascal Triduum is the most solemn time of the church year. It is a three-day Eucharistic season that ceases Lent and announces the joy of the Easter season. It begins on Holy Thursday and ends with Easter Sunday. This secular and sacred three-day period commemorates the suffering, death burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Members of the Basilica of St. Patrick's along with members of Regnum Christi celebrated the second Holy day of the three days vigil of the Holy week by walking out of the church in silence, going in procession through the streets of Soho, and coming back to the ancient Basilica to culminate the enactment of the Passion of Christ.
