THE MERMAID PARADE IS THE PERFECT CANVAS FOR ANY CREATIVE
Saturday, June 17th, 2017
For 35 consecutive years, the Mermaid Parade has been a source of inspiration for thousands of New Yorkers. Every year, the parade draws over half a million people from all over the five boroughs to the streets of Coney Island to celebrate creativity. A community of artists founded the Mermaid Parade in 1983 with three goals in mind: to preserve Greek and Roman mythology, to create self-esteem, and to promote urban self-expression.
The goals behind the Mermaid Festival are the cornerstone of the most elaborated, ingenious, innovative, clever, original, extravagant, bizarre, flashy, and flamboyant mermaid outfits. Shells, body paint, plastic pipes, feathers, hats, ropes, spray paint, wigs, wood, flowers, colorful fabrics and unbelievable textures are just some of the multiple source materials used to create the most extravagant, sophisticated, and dazzling costumes of this magnificent summer festival. |
