THE CHARM BEHIND THE BIG A
Aqueduct Racetrack is a hidden jewel in the borough of Queens. This magnificent 210 acre property belonged to the old Brooklyn Water Works. This ancient aqueduct brought water to New York City from the Hempstead Plain, which eventually transformed into a massive racetrack also known as the Big A.
The Big A opened its doors to the public for the first time on September 27th, 1894. Over the decades, Aqueduct has been the perfect
platform for many memorable and unforgettable races, such as the Triple Dead Heat of 1944. This paradigmatic race made history after three monumental horses (Brownie, Bossuet, and Wait a Bit) finished in a triple dead heat in the 46th running of the Carter Handicap.
The beloved Secretariat, Man o’ War, Buckpasser, Dr. Fager, Sword Dancer, Kelso, Foregor, Cigar, Smarty Jones, and Easy Goer are the most iconic American racing legends that emerged from Aqueduct’s turf.
Over the years, the Big A has been rebuilt, expanded, modernized, and heavily invested. Resorts World Casino is a multi-level, 415,000 square foot casino and is the latest vast modification and addition to the ancient and legendary racetrack.
