HeForShe CELEBRATES TWO YEARS OF MOVEMENT
September 20th, 2016
HeForShe is a solidarity movement for gender equality initiated by UN Women. The campaign was launched on September 20th, 2014 at the United Nations. UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador Emma Watson extended an invitation to men and boys to build on the work of the women's movement as equal partners.
Within the first week, more than 100,000 men and boys from around the world committed to gender equality, including one man in at least every country in the world. The launch sparked 1.2 billion conversations on social media.
Today, millions more have signed on and more than 200 HeForShe student clubs have organically emerged in different countries and regions. Over the past two years, HeForShe has been working innovatively from the top-down and the bottom-up to create real impact. Programs include HeForShe Arts Week, #GetFree University Tour, and IMPACT 10x10x10.
IMPACT 10x10x10 is a 3 to 5 year pilot partnership with 10 male Heads of State, 10 university leaders, and 10 CEOs of global corporations. Its goals: to create systematic and structural change across institutions and to accelerate the achievements of gender equality by 2030. Together, these "IMPACT champions" have identified 90 bold, game-changing and measurable commitments toward
creating gender equality in their respective institutions and domains.
The HeForShe initiative is an accelerator for both the work of UN Women in creating Planet 50/50 by 2030 and the United Nations' commitment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
In September 2015, The United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which sets out 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and seeks to make significant progress in global development by 2030. By engaging men and boys in creating
sustainable solutions for gender equality, HeForShe contributes to the realization of this overall vision.
